This Montreal group featuring Members of Puffer and Béton Armé unveils a fully evolved and classy vision on their second Tape following up on their admirable, if still a bit rough-around-the-edges 2023 Demo. The opener Insoutenable comes dashing right out of the gate with a pronounced Radio Birdman and early New Christs kind of energy which is joined by more contemporary sounding elements of melodic post punk á la The Estranged and Dead Finks, having much of a folk-ish, roots-y quality to it. Another standout is Rien ne t’empêchera, which strikes me as a perfect fusion of a catchy oldschool Oi! singalong with jangly power pop.
More of that real belgian punk that’s totally not actually made by any dudes from Montreal or New York, pinky promise! Musically, this is their most mature, well-rounded effort to date, blending them undeniable eighties euro punk influences they like to wear on their sleeves with equal parts of Oi!, Post Punk, slight traces Death Rock of that same era. Of more recent phenomena, the best comparison i can come up with is a more primitive and melodic variant of US post punk cornerstone Institute of whom, i’ve heard, some dude is also totally not involved here.
Not kidding, this is some honest to god oi! shit right there yet this stuff also couldn’t be more far removed from what you’d normally expect out of the genre, also marking a sharp departure from this Los Angeles group’s (rather unremarkable, if you ask me) earlier output. Rather, this record strikes me as another welcome addition to the small but growing canon of the emerging dungeon punk bubble, kinda like what a simplified Poison Ruïn might sound like if they dialed down the post punk and went all-in on the oi! elements. Add to that a singer who seems to channel some sort of alternate-reality true metal Frankie Stubbs clone and what you get is a new favorite batch of tunes for crushing the world’s injustuces with righteous anger and primitive, blunt weaponry.
