Shrinkwrap Killers – Feed The Clones Pt. 2

For the follow-up to their excellent 2023 EP Feed The Clones Pt. 1 – which has been their first record to fully realize their potential IMO – the Oakland group can’t be bothered to tweak their specific formula a whole lot, just as the “part 2” designation would already suggest. That’s fine with me ‘cos there wasn’t anything broken with their sound to begin with and much of the song material collected on here is top notch shit once again – even though, admittedly, this thing sometimes feels more like an EP’s worth of hits wedged inbetween a good deal of more sluggish, abstract, atmospheric tunes this time around, much of which i’m tempted to classify as glorified interlude material. Nonetheless, this is yet another essential listen for connoisseurs of demented, Spits-flavoured horror-/garage-/synth punk fodder.

Psychic Vampire – Sophomaniac

Excellent garage-leaning horror punk from yet another Minneapolis group. I gotta admit i wasn’t too thrilled at first as directionless is probably the right word to describe the opening track Lobotomized of their first long-playing effort, but thankfully after that, they quickly find their footing with pretty much everything that follows being on a different level altogether as flourishes of eighties early goth- and death rock collide with elements of early west coast punk and hardcore, plus riffs and solos straight out of the ’70s metal and motörpunk playbook in an inventive and tight-as-fuck explosion of highly addictive hooks.

Dick Hick – Evil Music !!!

Horror-/dungeon-themed Garage Punk from Houston. Blown-out, smelly and abrasive, this shit strikes me as a mix of early Strange Attractor, Neo Neos, Lumpy & The Dumpers, Stinkhole and Research Reactor Corp. What the fuck’s not to like about such a proposition? I’d much rather listen to that than whatever shit you’re listening to.
