The tireless Leipzig scene strikes again with yet another quality bunch of eggpunk tunes roughly in the vein of a less distorted Prison Affair, Beer, Egg Idiot or Research Reactor Corp.. Sure, don’t expect anything new or groundbreaking here but this shit still packs plenty of a familiar quirky punch and tons of a reliable, if – at this point – kinda basic and no longer terribly original kind of fun.
I don’t think i’ve ever given Media Puzzle from Lismore, Australia the full blog post spotlight here so far which is a freakin’ crime really, as this dude has by now been a constant presence on the eggpunk periphery for close to two years and, despite keeping relatively close to a well-established genre formula at the surface-level at least, has since developed a voice pretty much of his own after all and it’s just pretty fucking hard to escape the gravitational pull of his super catchy and instantly likeable make of garage punk, stuffed to the brim with contagious hooks.
New eggpunk fun from Hamburg, Germany which – as far as the german scene is concerned – i’m gonna try to describe as a mix of Pisse and Egg Idiot with added flavors of international acts á la Prison Affair, Winky Frown, Kowboje and Beer. Some other curious shit is going on here as well though, for example with sort of a dungeon vibe in Spuren and Knight having some of the slightly goth-ish aura of both early and recent Powerplant.
Yet another kickass split 7″ coming to us via Goodbye Boozy records. On it, Leipzig, Germany group Autobahns set off one oldschool hardcore smasher followed by an angular garage punk hit with a slightly southern-ish flavor. Speaking of southern-ish – that is exactly one of the garage punk sub-niches Elvis 2 have been occupying for just over a year now and the two new songs of the australian garage-/fuzz punk group are more of that addictive shit that had us begging for more pretty much ever since their first digital single cropped up on bandcamp, an Elvis 2-shaped hole in our hearts which their recent debut LP still ain’t nearly enough to fully occupy.
Two titans of contemporary garage-/synth-/eggpunk join forces once again for a new Goodbye Boozy 7″ that combines three new tunes with the tracks from 2023’s Genetic Southern Hemisphere Christmas EP and what can i say, that shit sounds pretty much like what you’d imagine a Busted Head Racket & Billiam collaboration to sound like which is to say absolutely glorious like the best of both worlds squared and bearing the unique signatures of two of the australian garage underground’s brightest creative spirits.
Here’s yet another bucket of egg-ish garage-/synth punk in the form of this Melbourne group’s charming collection of demo recordings of which some “proper” recordings are rumored to exist by now as well, which we’re hopefully gonna get to hear quite soon. Just as on their debut EP earlier this year this shit ain’t gonna redefine the genre but delivers some quite infectious tunes staying within the specifications and tropes of contemporary garage-/eggpunk while also showing some massive improvement over the debut in terms of consistency and sheer catchyness.
Now this is some equally appealing and pleasantly out-there shit right here, coming from a group of unknown origin that might be a duo or just a single split-personality being, so yeah, everything is appropriately nebulous and undefined here. The first three tracks start out like something of an eggpunk version of that whole Feed/Zhoop/Brundle/etc. clusterfuck with further flourishes from the funked-up ends of ’80s post punk and no wave while also channeling a distinct vibe of eggpunk’s early proto-genre days. 1 + 6 + 2 + 9 + 8 Milligrams then takes an unexpected detour into quirky electro punk somewhat reminiscent of Freak Genes, whose earlier works are also reflected in Sallywagger for example, plus an additional touch of Skull Cult. To round things out, some of the more no-frills guitar-centric tunes such as Big Man have some distinctly old-fashioned Neo Neos- or very early Erik Nervous-like qualities seeping in.
Three incredible tracks dumped on bandcamp over the course of the past one-and-a-half years made us hungry for more tunes of this Melbourne group and i’m pleased to say that this new probably-not-quite-an-LP’s worth material (including the aforementioned singles) fulfills all of the pretty high expectations. What Steröid do to eighties Metal, this group pulls off with regards to ’70s hard-, southern rock, a couple of other dad rock-ish vibes and transforms it into an only slightly egg-ish, maximally fuzzed-out aesthetic of ultra-catchy garage punk and power pop with an unusual knack for infectious guitar leads – a glorious non-stop barrage of captivating riffs, resilient hooks and stubborn earworms, in an unlikely way combining some of the traits of, say, Sheer Mag’s early EPs and more recent shit by Satanic Togas.
The californian label Grime Stone Records has long been way ahead of the curve when it comes to the more quirky ends of blackened- and dungeon punk releases and even if the musical merits of the bands and projects featured didn’t always manage to keep up with their lofty ambitions, these folks have also brought us some undeniable contemporary classics by the likes of Bloody Keep and Drýsildjöfull. The newest cassette by Curta’n Wall is yet another strong contender for the latter category, being a prime example of the more playful and egg-ish – though also in a way quite traditionally dungeon synth-inspired – end of the genre spectrum, drawing on some of the strongest tunes in their already quite prolific discography as a rock-solid basis for their insane sonic escapades while toning down some of the cheesiest (previously often unbearably so) aspects of their sound just enough to hit a certain sweet spot with me. While parts of their previous work have struck me as more novelty than substance, this record has finally grown a healthy amount of real meat around its bones.
One of the things i absolutely adore about the ongoing egg punk explosion is what an incredibly international affair the whole thing has grown into over time and the most recent case in point would be this group from Chengdu, China playing a quirky and synth-heavy addition to the genre, bearing particular similarities to such groups as Italy’s Prison Affair, the United States’ Beer, Ukraine’s Завірюга, Turkey’s Goblin Daycare, Israel’s Paulo Vicious, Australia’s The Gobs, Germany’s Egg Idiot and Brazil’s Cool Sorcery among many others.
